Yesterday during a business lunch meeting with a friend the topic of opportunities came up.


He said that opportunities are like the sunrise, they come and go, and if we don't catch them when they appear, that particular one is gone, never to be repeated.


I thought that was a great analogy. We were talking about it within the framework of business readiness ... laying the groundwork, the foundation, having the systems in place in your business so that you are ready when the opportunity presents itself, but it can be applied in lots of different ways.


How about when you receive a new lead or inquiry, or a phone call from a referral? If it takes you several hours to get back to that person, the opportunity is likely missed completely, or the relationship starts off on a less than professional tone (this happened to me just yesterday).


If you are a broker or team leader, this happens when growing. Agents don't classically move around a lot, when I have made changes it was usually after 6-7 years, and most agents I know are about the same. If you miss an opportunity to connect with an agent who will be a great fit for your team or brokerage, that opportunity is gone, as they aren't likely to make another move anytime soon.


Keep your eyes open for the sunrises, for the opportunities in your life and your business. Take time to plan and prepare for them so you are ready when they come along. That is the true mark of a business owner. Be purposeful, intentional about your business and your life. Then, when the sunrise appears, you are ready to soak it all in.
