This quote reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend (it was great to see you Dana Wright!) at my local association's awards yesterday. She was saying that she is trying to focus on doing something different/new in her life every month.
I really love that idea. How often do you do, try, something new? Either in your business or in your personal life. It is so easy to just keep doing what you've always done. Keep doing what works. Keep doing what is comfortable. In my experience, when you do that in business, eventually it's no longer going to work as well, and by the time you figure out that it is no longer working, you will be racing to catch up. The "basics" will always be there ... the need to be a strong negotiator, how to write contracts, how to price listings, but markets change, technology changes, and the ways to market homes and find buyers change. You must be able to stay in the flow of that if you want your business to keep moving forward.
For me, I've finally come to realize in my personal life that it is the doing of new things and having new experiences ... even though my first reaction is almost always to repel (and fear) what is new or different ... that invigorates my life. It fires me up, keeps me excited, it's like I can literally feeling a part of my brain (and often, my heart) stretching and expanding.
So I would challenge you today to try something new. It could be as simple as a new restaurant for lunch, or like my friend Dana try a cooking class, or maybe a new exercise class. Attend a real estate class on a new topic or one you haven't taken in a while. When you approach the world, your life, your business with a fresh perspective, it can make all the difference!
For those in the group who are in my local market and fellow members of the Dulles Area Association of Realtors, I'd like to congratulate everyone who was recognized yesterday. Especially to Rebecca Truslow Vittitow, who was named Realtor of the Year! Not only is Rebecca a terrific realtor, but she truly has a heart of gold and works diligently all year through to support and give back to our community through charity activities big and small supporting Toys for Tots, the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter, and more. Amazing job Rebecca, so well deserved!
