Confidence is key in so many things that we do. Presenting yourself as a confident professional helps your clients to feel at ease, and to feel more comfortable in choosing to work with you and to trust your advice. I have never been the person who felt comfortable in striking up the random conversation with the person next to me in line at the grocery store, or just bringing up what I do for a living and then handing out my business card. When I was selling, to help combat my “shyness” I would often wear my name tag while I ran errands between appointments and people would strike up a conversation with me (sounds cheesy, I know, but it worked!) … but then, what to say to them! Is it just me, or does nearly every time you are talking to someone and they find out what you do they ask “so, how’s the market?”. To help build my confidence, I would memorize a statistic or two about our local market (DOM, inventory levels year over year, etc), and ensure that I did plenty of previewing (if I wasn’t out showing) so I would have lots of properties to talk about. This really worked like a charm for me. Anytime someone asked, “how’s the market”, I could fire back with a stat that made me sound really smart, and/or start talking about a beautiful new house that I had just seen. I felt comfortable and confident knowing that I would have something to say when the topic of real estate came up, and (I think) I sounded very together to be able to mention real life statistics and properties in our local market.
